The 11th International Atmospheric Sciences Symposium (ATMOS'24), which is the only academic event in our country in terms of its field, was held at ITU SDKM on 23-25 October 2024.
Organised by Istanbul Technical University (ITU), the 11th International Atmospheric Sciences Symposium (ATMOS'24), the only scientific meeting of its field in Turkey, brought together experts from different parts of the world on a wide range of topics from various fields of meteorology to cloud physics, from the impact of climate change on health to space weather.
The opening ceremony of the symposium was attended by ITU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, as well as senior representatives of institutions that come to mind when it comes to weather and climate science in Turkey, including the General Director of Meteorology Volkan Mutlu Coşkun.
Our Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal stated that climate events, which are handled in the focus of environmental and atmospheric sciences, are important for the future of the whole world and our country in terms of economic, geopolitical, social and technological topics with their interactions and complex, variable and dynamic structures. He emphasised that there should be a synergistic and dynamic interaction between the institutions that produce and use knowledge in producing solutions to the challenges that are not yet ready and have not yet been encountered due to the climate crisis. Our Rector also underlined the importance of the ‘Sixth Innovation Wave’ based on green and digital transformation, which started after the pandemic and concerns the next 25 years, by focusing on the periodic innovation waves experienced from past to present. Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal also touched upon what can be done to implement sustainable systems that will produce science for society as well as producing science together with society.
ATMOS'24, held at ITU Süleyman Demirel Cultural Centre (SDKM), is held every year in the light of the themes determined by the World Meteorological Organisation. This year's theme is ‘Air, Climate and Water for a Sustainable Future’. The symposium is important in terms of emphasising that atmospheric sciences is an interdisciplinary field that combines data science, energy, aviation, sustainability and air pollution rather than being a limiting discipline.
Within the framework of ATMOS'24, a total of 80 researches, including 55 oral presentations and 25 poster presentations, were presented. Researches from 21 different universities and 5 different state institutions from Turkey and 10 different universities from abroad were shared. Researchers from Iran, Greece, Bulgaria, Sudan, Sudan, Croatia, Portugal, Canada, United States of America, Chile and Denmark were hosted at the symposium. ATMOS'24 brought together 10 invited speakers, 6 of whom were from abroad, with researchers.
ATMOS'24, supported by TÜBİTAK, IBB, İSKİ, Esenler Municipality, BLG Chemical Technologies and our student club METAR, ended with a closing ceremony on 25 October.
